Porsche has a remarkable ability to make heavy cars handle far better than their size suggests. The original Cayenne demonstrated that a large SUV could be genuinely entertaining to drive, while the petrol-powered Macan became one of the most enjoyable models in its class.

Now the Macan Electric has arrived, bringing an entirely new platform, advanced battery technology and the sort of acceleration that would have seemed extraordinary in a family SUV only a few years ago.

It's also a significant test for Porsche. Electric cars are naturally quick, but delivering strong acceleration is only part of what makes a Porsche special. The steering, suspension and way the car responds through corners matter just as much, particularly to buyers who enjoy driving.

Fortunately, Porsche has paid attention to those details. The Macan Electric feels precise, responsive and surprisingly agile, despite carrying a substantial battery and weighing considerably more than its petrol predecessor.

The design is unmistakably Porsche, with a low nose, muscular wheel arches and a sleek rear end. It's more aerodynamic than the previous Macan, but still looks like a premium sports SUV rather than something designed purely to demonstrate new technology.

Against rivals such as the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC Electric, the Macan places greater emphasis on driving enjoyment. It still offers comfort, practicality and modern technology, but its handling is what makes it particularly special.

Prices, Engines & Trim Levels

The Porsche Macan Electric arrived in 2024, with the range subsequently expanding to include five versions. UK prices currently begin at approximately £69,800 for the entry-level Macan Electric, rising to nearly £100,000 for the Turbo before optional equipment.

The standard Macan Electric uses a single rear-mounted motor producing up to 355bhp with launch control. Acceleration from 0–62mph takes around 5.7 seconds, while official WLTP range reaches up to 398 miles, depending on specification and wheel size. A realistic expectation in mixed UK driving is approximately 300–350 miles in favourable conditions.

Despite being the least powerful version, it feels impressively quick. The rear-wheel-drive layout gives it a well-balanced feel through corners, and the lighter drivetrain helps efficiency. It's an attractive option for buyers who want the Macan's excellent handling without paying for additional performance.

The Macan 4 Electric, starting at approximately £73,100, adds a second motor and all-wheel drive. Output increases to 402bhp with launch control, reducing the 0–62mph time to 5.2 seconds. Official range reaches up to 379 miles, with approximately 290–335 miles achievable in favourable everyday conditions.

The additional traction is particularly useful on wet roads, allowing the car to accelerate confidently without struggling for grip. It also provides a welcome degree of reassurance during winter.

The Macan 4S Electric increases power to 509bhp and cuts the 0–62mph time to 4.1 seconds. Priced from approximately £78,300, it offers stronger acceleration while retaining much of the comfort and practicality of the Macan 4. Official range reaches up to 379 miles.

The sportier Macan GTS Electric develops 563bhp, reaching 62mph in just 3.8 seconds. Starting at approximately £90,800, it includes more focused suspension settings, distinctive styling and additional performance equipment. Official range reaches up to 363 miles, although energetic driving will reduce that considerably.

At the top sits the Macan Turbo Electric, producing an extraordinary 630bhp with launch control. Prices begin at approximately £99,300, with acceleration to 62mph taking just 3.3 seconds. Official range reaches up to 366 miles.

All versions use a battery with approximately 95kWh of usable capacity, supporting impressive rapid-charging speeds.

Even the standard Macan has a generous equipment list, but Porsche offers an extensive selection of optional extras. Larger wheels, upgraded upholstery, additional chassis systems and premium audio can quickly increase the final price.

The Macan 4 is particularly convincing. It has excellent performance, strong range and the reassurance of all-wheel drive, while retaining much of the driving enjoyment offered by considerably more expensive versions.

Interior

The Macan Electric's interior feels exactly as a modern Porsche should. The dashboard is clean and attractive, the driving position is excellent and the quality of the materials gives the cabin a reassuringly expensive feel.

Unlike some electric SUVs, the Macan still places considerable emphasis on the driver. The steering wheel sits directly ahead, the controls are positioned within easy reach and the relatively low seating position creates a more sporting atmosphere than in many rivals.

The 12.6-inch curved digital instrument display is clear and easy to read, while a 10.9-inch central touchscreen handles navigation, entertainment and vehicle settings. An optional passenger display allows the front passenger to operate certain functions independently.

The infotainment system is generally excellent, with sharp graphics, responsive menus and useful integration of battery and charging information. Navigation can calculate charging stops during longer journeys, taking the available range into account.

Porsche has also retained physical controls for important functions, including temperature settings. That's a welcome decision, particularly when compared with cars that require several touchscreen selections to make a simple adjustment.

Material quality is impressive throughout. The seats are beautifully finished, the dashboard feels solid and the various switches and controls have the quality expected from Porsche. Higher specifications introduce more elaborate upholstery, additional trim finishes and distinctive interior detailing.

The front seats provide an excellent combination of comfort and support. Standard seats are well suited to longer journeys, while optional sports seats offer more support through corners without becoming excessively firm.

Forward visibility is good, although the rising waistline and relatively small rear window make the view behind less impressive. Parking cameras and sensors help considerably, especially in narrow spaces.

Rear passenger space is respectable, but the Macan isn't as accommodating as some larger electric SUVs. Two adults can sit comfortably, although taller passengers may notice that legroom and headroom are slightly tighter than in the Mercedes GLC Electric or Tesla Model Y.

The sloping roofline contributes to the Macan's attractive exterior design, but it also reduces some of the available space in the rear.

There's a strong sense of quality throughout the cabin. The Macan doesn't need enormous displays or elaborate lighting effects to impress. Its comfortable seats, carefully finished materials and driver-focused layout make it feel special every time you get behind the wheel.

Driving Experience

This is where the Macan Electric really stands out. Plenty of electric SUVs offer impressive acceleration, but Porsche has gone much further by developing steering, suspension and handling that make the car genuinely enjoyable to drive.

Even the entry-level rear-wheel-drive version feels remarkably agile. The steering is precise and responsive, making it easy to position the car through corners, while the suspension keeps body movement well controlled.

Despite weighing well over two tonnes, the Macan changes direction with surprising confidence. The low-mounted battery helps improve stability, and Porsche's carefully developed suspension provides excellent grip without making the car feel excessively heavy.

The Macan 4 adds all-wheel-drive traction, which is particularly useful on wet British roads. Accelerating out of corners feels reassuringly secure, while the additional power gives it more than enough performance for overtaking.

The 4S introduces noticeably stronger acceleration, while the Turbo's enormous power output makes it extraordinarily quick. The Turbo can reach motorway speeds in little more than three seconds, which is remarkable for something capable of carrying a family and their luggage.

Yet the more powerful models don't automatically provide the most enjoyable driving experience. The Macan 4 already handles exceptionally well, and its performance is more than sufficient for normal roads.

The GTS introduces a more focused suspension setup and sharper responses, making it particularly appealing to enthusiasts. However, the firmer ride may be less comfortable for drivers who spend most of their time on damaged urban roads.

Ride comfort across the range is generally impressive. On smaller wheels, the suspension absorbs most road imperfections well, while optional air suspension provides an even broader range of comfort settings.

Larger wheels make potholes and sharp bumps more noticeable, particularly on GTS and Turbo versions. Buyers should consider this carefully rather than selecting the largest wheels purely for their appearance.

Motorway refinement is excellent. Wind noise is well controlled, the seats remain comfortable over longer distances and the car feels stable at higher speeds.

The brakes are powerful and easy to control, while regenerative braking works smoothly alongside the conventional braking system.

The Macan Electric offers something that many rivals struggle to match: precise handling and responsive steering in a comfortable, practical SUV. It's a particularly impressive achievement given the size and weight of the battery.

Running Costs

The Macan Electric combines substantial battery capacity with excellent charging technology, making it a genuinely capable long-distance SUV despite its strong performance.

All versions use a 100kWh gross battery, with approximately 95kWh usable. Official range varies considerably depending on motor configuration, wheel size and equipment.

The rear-wheel-drive Macan Electric offers the longest range, reaching up to 398 miles WLTP. In everyday UK driving, approximately 300–350 miles should be achievable in favourable conditions, although cold weather and motorway speeds will reduce that figure.

The Macan 4 offers up to 379 miles officially, with realistic mixed-driving expectations of approximately 290–335 miles. That's an impressive result for an all-wheel-drive SUV with more than 400bhp.

The more powerful 4S provides similar official range, although using its additional performance regularly will increase electricity consumption. The GTS and Turbo sacrifice some efficiency for their substantial acceleration, with realistic mixed-driving figures generally falling closer to 250–310 miles, depending on driving conditions.

Charging is one of the Macan's greatest strengths. Its 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC rapid charging at up to 270kW, allowing a 10–80% recharge in approximately 21 minutes on a suitable ultra-rapid charger.

That's particularly impressive for a vehicle with such a large battery. During a motorway stop, the Macan can recover enough energy for a substantial amount of additional driving, provided the battery is at the correct temperature and the charger can deliver sufficient power.

At home, the Macan supports 11kW AC charging. A typical UK 7.4kW wallbox will take approximately 14–15 hours for a complete recharge, including charging losses. Most owners will only need to replace the electricity used during normal daily journeys, making overnight charging practical.

Running costs will depend heavily on the charging tariff. Using cheap overnight electricity can make the Macan significantly cheaper to power than an equivalent petrol Porsche. Public rapid charging is considerably more expensive, particularly when regularly travelling long distances.

Servicing requirements are generally lower than those of a combustion-powered performance SUV, although replacement tyres, insurance and suspension repairs can still be expensive.

Higher-powered models use large performance tyres that may wear more quickly, especially when the available acceleration is used frequently.

Depreciation is another important consideration. Optional equipment can add many thousands to the purchase price, but not every upgrade will contribute significantly to the car's future resale value.

The Macan offers excellent range and charging performance, but it's still an expensive premium SUV. Its running costs may be lower than those of a petrol performance model, although ownership is unlikely to be inexpensive overall.

Practicality & Size

The Macan Electric is larger than the petrol model it replaced, measuring approximately 4,784–4,805mm long, 1,938–1,952mm wide and around 1,624mm tall, depending on the version. Its 2,893mm wheelbase provides useful interior space, although Porsche has placed considerable emphasis on preserving the car's sporty proportions.

Up front, space is generous. The seats offer extensive adjustment, the driving position is comfortable and there's plenty of headroom for taller occupants. The broad centre console provides useful storage, while the door pockets and smaller compartments are practical for phones, drinks and everyday items.

Rear accommodation is decent, although the Macan isn't the most spacious electric SUV in its class. Two adults can travel comfortably, but taller passengers may find legroom and headroom slightly limited compared with boxier rivals.

The sloping roofline makes the car look attractive, although it also reduces rear headroom and makes getting in slightly less convenient for taller passengers.

Families will find the rear seats perfectly usable for children, and ISOFIX mounting points are provided for child seats. However, those regularly carrying three adults across the back may prefer a larger SUV.

The boot offers approximately 540 litres in most versions, providing ample space for shopping, suitcases, pushchairs and family luggage. The higher-performance GTS and Turbo can offer around 480 litres, depending on specification.

Folding the rear seats increases capacity to approximately 1,348 litres in the standard models, making the Macan suitable for carrying larger items. The rear seats split 40:20:40, allowing longer objects to be transported while retaining some rear seating.

There's also an 84-litre front storage compartment, which is particularly useful for charging cables, smaller bags or items you'd prefer to keep separate from luggage.

The boot opening is reasonably wide, although the sloping rear window limits the height of objects that can be carried. Rivals such as the Tesla Model Y provide more room for bulky luggage and furniture.

Rear visibility is slightly restricted by the design, although parking cameras and sensors make manoeuvring easier.

The Macan Electric offers more than enough practicality for most families, but it isn't designed to maximise passenger and luggage space at every opportunity.

For buyers who want a comfortable family SUV that also provides an enjoyable driving experience, the Macan offers an attractive combination of both qualities.

Safety & Reliability

Porsche has equipped the Macan Electric with a comprehensive range of safety technology, including advanced crash protection, electronic stability systems and modern driver-assistance features.

Autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring are among the available systems. Parking sensors, cameras and more advanced assistance features help compensate for the restricted rear visibility.

The dedicated electric platform incorporates extensive protection around the high-voltage battery, while the low battery position helps improve stability through corners and during sudden changes of direction.

The braking system is particularly impressive. Powerful conventional brakes work alongside regenerative braking to provide strong stopping performance, even when the vehicle is travelling quickly.

All-wheel-drive versions offer additional traction in poor weather, with sophisticated electronic systems distributing power between the axles according to available grip.

Long-term reliability remains difficult to judge conclusively because the electric Macan was introduced in 2024. There isn't yet the same level of ownership history available as for the petrol-powered model.

Porsche has considerable experience with electric vehicles through the Taycan, and the Macan shares important underlying technology with the Audi Q6 e-tron. However, that doesn't guarantee every electronic component or drivetrain system will remain trouble-free.

The advanced suspension, digital displays, battery-management equipment and numerous electronic control systems could be expensive to repair outside warranty.

Software updates will be particularly important, helping address faults and improve charging, infotainment and vehicle functions. Used buyers should ensure any required manufacturer recalls and software updates have been completed.

Battery durability will become clearer as more cars accumulate high mileage. The sophisticated cooling system should help protect battery performance, although long-term capacity will depend on operating conditions and charging habits.

Interior build quality is excellent, with substantial materials and well-finished controls throughout. The Macan feels every bit as expensive as its purchase price suggests.

For buyers considering long-term ownership, maintaining a complete service history and understanding warranty coverage will be important, particularly given the potential cost of repairs to the more sophisticated equipment.

Final Thoughts

The Porsche Macan Electric demonstrates how enjoyable an electric SUV can be when steering, suspension and handling receive as much attention as acceleration and battery range.

It's beautifully finished, exceptionally capable on winding roads and comfortable enough to make long journeys enjoyable. The performance is impressive across the range, while rapid charging and useful electric range make it practical for everyday ownership.

The price is high, particularly once optional equipment is added, and some competitors provide more passenger and luggage space for less money.

But the Macan's driving experience is what makes it stand out. Few electric SUVs manage to combine such precise handling with this level of comfort and practicality.

The Macan 4 Electric is our recommendation, offering the strongest balance of performance, range and everyday usability.
