The Changan Deepal S05 is another new arrival from China but there is considerably more experience behind the unfamiliar badge than buyers might initially expect.

Changan is one of China's established automotive manufacturers, with extensive engineering and production operations. The company also has a research and development presence in Birmingham and a European design operation in Italy. The Deepal S05 is the smaller of the brand's electric SUVs offered in Britain, sitting below the larger S07. It competes with the Skoda Elroq, Renault Scenic E-Tech, Kia EV5 and Peugeot E-3008, placing it in one of the most competitive parts of the electric car market.

The S05 makes a strong impression with its attractive styling, high-quality interior and extensive equipment. It also offers rapid charging and a choice of rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive powertrains. However, a generous specification is no guarantee of an excellent car. The Deepal's driving experience and relatively high price prevent it from challenging the strongest alternatives quite as convincingly as its showroom appearance suggests.

Prices, Engines & Trim Levels

The Changan Deepal S05 is available in two main UK versions: RWD Max and AWD Max. Manufacturer pricing starts at approximately £37,990 for the rear-wheel-drive model, rising to £39,990 for the all-wheel-drive version. Some retail price listings are higher, so buyers should confirm the current on-the-road price and available manufacturer offers. Both versions use a 68.8kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. The RWD Max has a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 200kW, equivalent to approximately 268bhp. It accelerates from 0–62mph in 7.5 seconds and offers up to 303 miles of official WLTP range. The AWD Max adds a second electric motor, increasing combined output to 320kW, or approximately 429bhp. That brings the 0–62mph time down to 5.5 seconds, making the all-wheel-drive version considerably quicker. However, the additional performance reduces official range to approximately 278 miles.

Both models come with an extensive equipment package. Standard features include 20-inch alloy wheels, a large central touchscreen, augmented-reality head-up display, wireless smartphone connectivity, heated and ventilated front seats, electrically adjustable seating, a premium sound system and numerous driver assistance functions. A panoramic roof is available as an additional option. There are few conventional trim choices, making the buying process relatively simple. The RWD Max is our recommendation. Its performance is already more than adequate, and the additional official range makes it better suited to everyday use and longer journeys. The AWD Max will appeal to buyers wanting stronger acceleration and additional traction, but most drivers are unlikely to need its extra performance.

Interior

The Deepal S05 is an attractive electric SUV, with smooth bodywork, narrow headlights and a relatively low roofline compared with more traditional family SUVs. Its styling was developed with European involvement, and the result is a car that looks modern without relying on excessive decorative details. The proportions are well balanced, and the broad stance gives it a substantial appearance. Inside, the S05 makes an even stronger impression. The dashboard is dominated by a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, while the absence of a conventional instrument display creates a particularly minimalist appearance. Instead, important driving information is projected onto the windscreen through a head-up display. This arrangement works reasonably well once familiar, although drivers accustomed to conventional instruments may initially find it unusual.

Material quality is impressive. Soft-touch surfaces, attractive trim finishes and carefully assembled fittings give the cabin a more expensive appearance than many emerging-brand competitors. The front seats are comfortable, with heating and ventilation included as standard. The front passenger seat is particularly elaborate, offering extensive adjustment and a reclining function designed to make longer journeys more comfortable. The touchscreen is sharp and provides access to navigation, entertainment, vehicle settings and climate controls. However, the lack of conventional buttons is frustrating. Even relatively simple functions can require several interactions with the screen. The system is generally responsive, but the convenience of a large display doesn't eliminate the need for straightforward physical controls. Wireless smartphone connectivity and a premium sound system add to the cabin's appeal.

Overall, the Deepal S05 has one of the more impressive interiors among newer Chinese electric SUVs. Its design and material quality are genuine strengths, although usability could be improved.

Driving Experience

The Deepal S05 offers more than enough performance for everyday driving. The rear-wheel-drive version produces approximately 268bhp and accelerates from 0–62mph in 7.5 seconds. It responds quickly to accelerator inputs and has sufficient power for joining motorways, overtaking and travelling with a full complement of passengers. The AWD Max is considerably faster, producing approximately 429bhp and reaching 62mph in 5.5 seconds. That is impressive performance for a family SUV, although it is unlikely to be necessary for most drivers.

Around town, the S05 is reasonably comfortable and easy to drive smoothly. The electric powertrain is quiet, and the cabin does a good job of isolating occupants from motor noise. However, the suspension is less convincing on uneven roads. The car can take longer than expected to settle after bumps, while body movement becomes noticeable when changing direction. On winding roads, the steering feels relatively heavy and provides limited feedback. The S05 is capable of maintaining a sensible pace, but it lacks the confidence and precision of the best European alternatives. The Skoda Elroq feels more controlled through corners, while the Renault Scenic offers a more convincing balance of comfort and handling. Road noise can also become noticeable at motorway speeds, particularly on coarse surfaces.

The Deepal's driver assistance systems are extensive, although lane-keeping intervention can feel unnecessarily assertive in certain situations. Regenerative braking helps recover energy when slowing down, while selectable driving settings allow adjustments to the car's response. The S05 is most convincing when driven at a relaxed pace. It is comfortable enough for commuting and motorway travel, but its suspension and steering prevent it from being particularly enjoyable on demanding roads.

Running Costs

Both versions of the Changan Deepal S05 use a 68.8kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. The RWD Max offers an official WLTP range of up to 303 miles, while the more powerful AWD Max manages approximately 278 miles.

In everyday UK conditions, the rear-wheel-drive model should be capable of approximately 230–265 miles from a full charge in mild weather, depending on speed and driving conditions. The all-wheel-drive version is likely to achieve approximately 210–240 miles under similar circumstances. Winter motorway journeys could reduce these figures to around 180–215 miles for the RWD and approximately 165–195 miles for the AWD. These are estimates rather than results from an independent controlled test.

One of the S05's strongest features is rapid charging. The car can accept up to 200kW of DC charging power under suitable conditions, although that peak is available only over a limited part of the charging process. Changan quotes approximately 23 minutes for a 10–80% charge and just 15 minutes for a 30–80% top-up. Those are competitive figures and make the S05 more appealing for drivers who regularly undertake long motorway journeys. As with any electric car, charging speeds depend on battery temperature, the available charger output and the starting state of charge. AC charging is supported at up to 11kW. Using a typical 7kW home wallbox, a near-empty to full recharge should take approximately ten to eleven hours, including charging losses. The S05 also includes a heat pump, helping reduce heating-related energy consumption during colder weather.

Vehicle-to-load functionality is another useful feature, allowing compatible electrical equipment to draw power from the car's battery. Running costs should be competitive for owners able to charge at home, although the larger battery and relatively substantial vehicle weight mean it may use more electricity than smaller alternatives.

Practicality & Size

The Deepal S05 measures 4,598mm long, 1,900mm wide and 1,600mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,880mm. That makes it a substantial family SUV, with dimensions comparable to several established electric crossovers. Front passengers have plenty of room, and the raised driving position provides a good view ahead. The broad dashboard and large centre console contribute to the spacious appearance, while the cabin includes useful compartments for phones, drinks and smaller belongings.

Rear-seat passengers benefit from reasonable legroom and a flat floor, making the S05 suitable for family use. Two adults can travel comfortably in the back, although the available space is not quite as generous as the exterior dimensions might suggest. The boot provides 492 litres of capacity with the rear seats in place. That is a useful amount of luggage space for shopping, suitcases, pushchairs and everyday family equipment. Folding the rear seats increases capacity to approximately 1,250 litres according to the manufacturer's UK specification.

The S05 also has an unusually large storage compartment beneath the bonnet. The rear-wheel-drive model offers approximately 159 litres of front storage, while the all-wheel-drive version provides around 152 litres. This is considerably more useful than the small cable compartments fitted to many electric cars. It provides space for charging equipment, smaller bags or items that owners would prefer to keep separate from the main luggage area.

The S05 also has a quoted braked towing capacity of up to 1,600kg, which may appeal to buyers needing to tow a small caravan or trailer. Overall, the Deepal is a practical family SUV, with the large front storage compartment providing a particularly useful advantage.

Safety & Reliability

The Changan Deepal S05 has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, reflecting strong performance in independent safety assessments. Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane assistance, collision warnings and a range of other driver assistance systems. The car also benefits from an extensive airbag package and numerous features intended to improve occupant protection. However, the operation of the assistance systems is not always as convincing as their specification suggests.

Lane-keeping intervention can be intrusive on certain roads, and drivers may prefer to adjust individual functions where permitted. Changan provides a seven-year or 100,000-mile vehicle warranty, together with separate battery coverage extending to eight years under the applicable terms. This is reassuring for buyers considering a manufacturer that is still establishing itself in Britain. However, there is insufficient UK ownership history to make firm claims about long-term reliability.

The S05's extensive electronic equipment also makes software quality and technical support particularly important. Changan's UK engineering presence is encouraging, but prospective buyers should still investigate the availability of local servicing, replacement parts and warranty support. The long warranty provides useful protection, although the convenience of obtaining repairs will depend on the developing dealer network.

Final Thoughts

The Changan Deepal S05 has plenty to recommend it. Its attractive exterior, impressive interior quality, generous equipment and rapid charging performance make it a credible alternative to established electric family SUVs. The rear-wheel-drive version also offers a useful official range of up to 303 miles, while the all-wheel-drive model delivers genuinely strong acceleration. However, the S05 isn't as convincing on the road as it is in the showroom. The suspension lacks control over uneven surfaces, the steering provides limited feedback and the heavy reliance on touchscreen functions can become frustrating. Its pricing also places it close to excellent alternatives from Skoda, Renault and Kia.

The RWD Max is the version to choose, offering the better balance of performance, range and value. For buyers attracted by its design, technology and extensive equipment, the Deepal S05 is worth considering. Nevertheless, a comparison test drive with the Skoda Elroq would be sensible before making a final decision.
